I like this book for work with most clients. I wouldn't use it for work with complex trauma though. The author comes across as harsh and shaming to those that have already been through enough. I was one of the clients she describes not wanting to work with. I have disorganized attachment, object permanency issues, get panicked when I feel emotion, have trouble with dissociation and parts, have trouble trusting people enough to form a deep relationship. I got lucky and found a therapist that would work with me anyway. My therapist allows things this one is way against like an occasional hug and a transitional object. She also allows me to text when needed and I use this with precaution and only when really needed. I am a client this author would find unlikely to improve. Not so. Because of my therapist, I have learned to attach and connect to someone safe (her for now), I have learned to trust and tolerate intense emotion. I have learned that rupture can be alright with repair. I have learned so much. I know this book is about ten years old and a lot on how to work with complex trauma has come out since. If you have deeply traumatized clients, especially developmentally traumatized please find a trauma-informed method. The way she worked with her traumatized clients and saw them as people made me very sad.
